Understanding and improving communication is at the heart of my therapeutic approach. People from all over the world seek therapy for various communication difficulties. While differences and diversity can enrich our lives, they can also create stumbling blocks in how we perceive ourselves and interact with others. Thankfully, modern education encourages us to be less judgmental and more accepting and curious about each other’s differences.
Challenging Old Communication Patterns:
Families often carry forward patterns of old communication styles, which can become problematic if not addressed. These outdated patterns can be seen as generational trauma—old ways of relating and surviving that form barriers for new generations. John Bowlby’s attachment theory highlights that our early life experiences significantly influence our adult relationships. We all bring our unique attachment styles into our interactions, ranging from secure to anxious, ambivalent, dismissive, and chaotic. Understanding these patterns is crucial for improving communication and building healthy relationships.
Trauma and Attachment:
The trauma model, developed by Herman and further refined by Janina Fisher, provides a three-stage model for rebuilding and healing from both physical and emotional trauma. Recognizing the impact of early life experiences and the loss of connection to our true selves is essential for healing. Our brains, being pattern-matching organs, are easily triggered and influenced by the behaviors and views of those around us. This is especially true since, as children, we depended on others for survival. Therapy can help in letting go of unhelpful patterns of relating that no longer serve us.
Building Earned Secure Attachment:
My goal is to assist clients in developing a strong “earned secure attachment” more aligned with their true selves. This helps them become less influenced by others in relationships, restoring their own voice and establishing healthy relational boundaries. Through this process, clients can foster stronger, healthier relationships at home, work, and within their social circles.
As a registered accredited member of the National Counselling Society (NCS) and the ICO (Independent Commissioner’s Office), I adhere to the highest standards of ethical practice and confidentiality. All client notes are securely stored and destroyed three years after the completion of therapy, ensuring your privacy and trust.
